Seller Agreement

Last updated: April 2025

This is the agreement you accept when you start selling on Gatekept. We wrote it in plain language because you should actually understand what you're agreeing to. We're on the same team here.

1. Who This Applies To

This agreement applies to anyone who sells digital products on Gatekept. When you turn on selling and list your first product, you're agreeing to everything on this page.

You need to be at least 18 years old (or the legal age in your country) to sell on Gatekept. If you're setting up a page for a business, you need to have the authority to agree on behalf of that business.

2. What You Can Sell

Gatekept is built for digital products. Things like:

  • Templates, presets, and design files
  • Courses, tutorials, and educational content
  • eBooks, guides, and written work
  • Music, audio, and sound packs
  • Software, plugins, and code
  • Art, illustrations, and graphics
  • Any other original digital work you created

Everything you sell must be something you made or have the rights to sell. That part is non-negotiable.

One more lane: the marketplace is for physical, second-hand items sold locally and settled in person — Gatekept never handles the money there and this agreement's payment terms don't apply to it. The Community Guidelines govern in-person selling.

3. What You Can't Sell

Some things don't belong here. You can't sell:

  • Anything you didn't make or don't have the rights to sell
  • Resold or pirated content from other platforms
  • Products that are misleading or don't match their description
  • Harmful, hateful, or illegal content
  • Empty or placeholder listings used to game the system
  • AI-generated content marketed as hand-made (be honest about your process)

If we find something that breaks these rules, we'll take it down. Repeated violations can lead to your account being suspended.

4. Pricing & Fees

You set your own prices. Whatever number you choose is what you keep. We don't take a cut from your price.

Instead, Gatekept charges buyers a service fee on top of your price: currently 10% of the price (minimum 50¢) plus a flat 60¢ that covers payment processing. If you list something for $20, the buyer pays $22.60 — you get $20, we get $2.60. Free products carry no fee. Tips work the same way: you receive the full tip, the tipper pays the fee on top.

You can change your prices anytime. You can also offer products for free if you want.

5. Payments & Payouts

There are two payout rails, and you pick one when you set up selling:

Stripe Connect (where Stripe operates): buyers pay through Stripe and the money settles to your connected Stripe account on Stripe's schedule — usually rolling with a short hold. We don't touch it.

The international rail (where Stripe doesn't reach you): Gatekept collects payments on your behalf and holds your balance. You withdraw whenever you like from Settings and we pay you out by PayPal. Because we're the merchant on this rail, chargebacks land on us — which is why balances on this rail can be held while a dispute or investigation is open.

If there's ever a payment issue, the processor handles the processing side and we handle the platform side. Between the two, we'll get it sorted.

6. Content Ownership

Your stuff stays yours. Full stop. You own everything you upload.

By listing on Gatekept, you give us a license to display, distribute, and promote your products on the platform. We need this to actually show your work to buyers, feature it in discovery, and include it in things like search results and recommendations.

This license only lasts while your product is live on Gatekept. If you take something down, we stop using it. We'll never sell your work ourselves or claim ownership of anything you create.

7. Refunds & Disputes

Digital products are tricky when it comes to refunds. Once someone downloads your file, they have it. We get that.

Refunds are your call. The buyer bought from you, so you decide. There's a Refund button on each sale in your dashboard's Earnings tab and you don't need to ask us to use it. Our guidance, not our rule: if a product is broken, doesn't match the description, or wasn't delivered, refund it.

A refund returns your listing price. The buyer gets your price back and your earnings from that sale are reversed — you keep 100% of your price on sales that stick, and nothing on one that gets taken back. The platform fee the buyer paid on top is not returned, because the processing and the service already happened.

You can refund a sale yourself for its first 14 days, while the money is still in the holding window — the reversal just comes off your pending balance. After that you may already have been paid out, so message us instead and we'll sort it; that amount is owed back and comes off future earnings.

We step in only where we have to: a chargeback, a fraud or safety investigation, or a buyer who can't reach you. We can also issue a refund ourselves where the law requires one, or where leaving it unrefunded would put the platform at risk.

If a buyer files a dispute, we'll reach out to you first before making a decision. We won't just side with one party without hearing both sides.

8. Account Suspension

We don't want to suspend anyone. But we will if we have to. Here's what could lead to that:

  • Selling content you don't have the rights to
  • Repeated complaints from buyers about product quality or honesty
  • Attempting to manipulate reviews, stats, or the platform
  • Abusive behavior toward buyers or the Gatekept team
  • Violating any laws

If we suspend your account, we'll tell you why. If it's something fixable, we'll give you a chance to fix it. Pending payouts are normally still processed on schedule — but during an active fraud, dispute, or safety investigation we can place a payout hold, which freezes withdrawals and new sales until the investigation resolves.

9. Taxes

You're responsible for your own taxes. We know that's not the most exciting sentence, but it's important.

Gatekept doesn't withhold taxes or file anything on your behalf. The money you earn from selling is your income, and it's up to you (or your accountant) to report it properly based on where you live.

If we're legally required to collect tax info from you (like a W-9 in the US), we'll let you know and walk you through it.

10. Changes to This Agreement

We might update this agreement from time to time. When we do, we'll let you know through email or a notification on the platform. We won't just quietly change things and hope nobody notices.

If a change is big enough to affect how you sell or how much you earn, we'll give you a heads-up before it kicks in. Continuing to sell on Gatekept after a change means you accept the new terms.
